A wild garden in the Hautes-Alpes, the Méouge Valley invites you to explore it on horseback. During a long ride, this hidden gem will reveal itself to riders: a trek beneath the Pied du Mulet mountain, a descent toward Lachau and the village of Ballon, and a ride along the Chabre ridge before heading down to Barret-sur-Méouge.

Description

Leave Eourres and head toward the Pied du Mulet cliff face, home to sinkholes and caves. The legend of the “moonhole” tells that on full moon nights, the moon sometimes slips through a “lace-like opening” and illuminates the village for a few moments.
Amid the lavender fields and meadows watered by the Méouge, head to the charming village of Lachau. Discover the castle and the Notre Dame de Calma church, both well worth a visit.
Pass through the hills above Eygalayes and at the foot of the Montagne de Chabre.
The route leads to Barret-sur-Méouge, on the banks of the famous Méouge. This river, flowing through both the Drôme and the Hautes-Alpes, already carries a Mediterranean feel. The Méouge, with its “honey-colored water,” originates in the Drôme and flows into the Buëch. Bathed in warmth and light, it winds through the gorges, one of the wonders of the Hautes-Alpes. Designated a biological reserve, they are teeming with alpine, Provençal, Iberian, and even North African plants. Most of the site belongs to the Méouge National Forest.
