The steep climb to Piéfourcha gives way to a very shaded trail.
The return trip through the Combe valley will be more leisurely, with a stream nearby. A quick stop at the viewing tube at the top of the Grande Fistoire via ferrata offers a view of the upper part of the Grand Vallon.

Description

  1. From the Via ferrata office (800 m), follow the road east for 500 m.
  2. At La Roche (829 m), leave the road and take the trail that initially crosses a donkey pasture before joining a track that you follow to a shelter for animals.
  3. From the Fougère sheepfold, a short round trip to the summit of the via ferrata and its viewing tube is a must. Otherwise, continue behind the building along a trail that initially climbs through the broom. Gradually, the forest gives way to heathland as you climb through the undergrowth. After a clearing, the trail descends to La Colle.
  4. At the junction at La Colle (1,300 m), leave the GR trail markers to the left and descend through a magnificent beech forest via a steep, winding path. Reach the bottom of the valley and continue through the woods along the stream, crossing several fords. Reach a trail and follow it to the left, passing a water intake shortly after. 2.5 km further on, you reach the village of Le Caire.
  5. Take the narrow street between the houses and, upon leaving the village, continue along the road to the first trail on the right, which you follow gently to the Via office and the base of the via ferrata.
  • Departure : Via ferrata office, Le Caire
  • Arrival : Via ferrata office, Le Caire
  • Towns crossed : Caire, Faucon-du-Caire, and Curbans

Recommandations

WARNING: On this route, you may encounter livestock guard dogs protecting herds from wolf attacks.
It is strongly discouraged to bring a pet dog, even if it is on a leash.
If you encounter a herd, stay calm: stop, let the guard dogs get a good look at you, then give the herd a wide berth without making any sudden movements.
